Fiction writers—and SF State Creative Writing faculty members—May-lee Chai and Junse Kim read from their new work, followed by a conversation between the two of them and with their audience. This event is rescheduled from one year previous, when the SF State campus was unexpectedly closed due to smoke from the Sonoma/Napa fires. Free and open to the public.
May-lee Chai is the author of ten books, including her newly-released collection of stories, Useful Phrases for Immigrants; the memoir Hapa Girl, a Kiriyama Prize Notable Book; the novel Tiger Girl, which won an Asian/Pacific American Award for Literature; and her original translation from Chinese to English of the 1934 Autobiography of Ba Jin. Her short prose has been published widely, including in The Rumpus, Missouri Review, Seventeen, Glimmer Train, Dallas Morning News, and San Francisco Chronicle. She is an Assistant Professor of Creative Writing at San Francisco State University.
Junse Kim is the recipient of a Pushcart Prize, a Faulkner Short Story Award, and the Philip Roth Residence in Creative Writing at Bucknell University. His fiction and creative nonfiction has been published in Ontario Review, ZYZZYVA, Cimarron Review, Fourteen Hills, as well as two anthologies: Pushcart Prize XXVII and Echoes Upon Echoes: New Korean American Writing. He is a Lecturer in Creative Writing at San Francisco State University, as well as teaching in other capacities in the Bay Area.
